The evening opened with a full house as the Light of Life Rescue Mission kicked off their annual gala. Auction items lined the walls of the LeMont Restaurant with items that included sports jerseys, golf packages and so much more. During the evening, guests were treated to the stories of several people who had graduated the Light of Life programs. Stirring stories of perseverance, effort and ultimately, success, moved many in the audience to tears of joy.

The highlight of the evening had to be Keynote Speaker Kelvin Beachum, Pittsburgh Steelers Offensive Guard. Kelvin, who is a native of Mexia, (pronounced Meh-hey-a)Texas, earned both his Bachelors in Economics and a Masters in Organizational Dynamics for Southern Methodist University. In order to fulfill his desire to give back, Beachum serves on the Mexia Chamber of Commerce, Mexia Economic Development Commitee, Mexia Rotary Club and other community initiatives in and around the state of Texas. He continues to give back by serving as Pittsburgh representative for the NFL Fuel Up to Play 60 program. This program encourages youth to eat healthy as well as include physical activity in their daily lives. Beachum was drafted by the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2012 and is now in the middle of his second season with the Steeler’s Offensive Line.

He follows in the footsteps of former Steeler Tunch Ilkin who has been involved with Light of Life Rescue Mission for many years. His participation in the mission lead him to write in tonight’s program, “I don’t know how many times I have been to the Mission in the last 26 years, but I am never the same when I walk out.”

Light of Life has several fundraiser’s each year. During the Christmas season they sell beautiful ornaments.
