Locals were ‘taking steps’ in support of a very important mission – local children, at the Run Shadyside event held on October 3.  The event, organized by the Shadyside Chamber of Commerce, was a 5K run and 1 mile family fun walk with proceeds benefiting the Boys & Girls Club of Shadyside, one of eight local branches of the Boys & Girls Club of Western PA.  The organization, known for their slogan “When school is out, the Club is in” focuses on creating a safe place for children to learn & grow, all while having fun.  The goal – enabling all young people in their care especially those that need them most, to reach their full potential as healthy, productive, caring and responsible citizens.

The Shadyside Club touched the lives of 1,080 different kids ages 5 to 17 last year through a variety of programs they operate.  Programming includes an afterschool program (2:30-6:30 pm), an evening program (6:30-8:30 pm) a youth sports program and summer program.  No school, no problem!  The branch even operates daylight hours (8 am – 5:30 pm) when Pittsburgh Public Schools are closed.  Membership is $12.00 a month and accommodations can be made for families with the inability to pay.

“We feel so fortunate to have the support of our local community,” said Shadyside Branch Director, David DiGirolamo.  “Money earned from this race will assist us in adding to the value of what our kids experience.  It allows us to organize fun things for the kids like assemblies and monthly pizza nights.  It also ensures we can keep making timely capital improvements when necessary, especially for items heavily used in our programs such as computers.”

Highlights from the event included a block party style celebration after the race which included a pancake breakfast and awards presentations to the top male and female participants.
